Modern Foreign Languages

The Modern Foreign Languages Department aims to foster the enjoyment of language learning and to encourage pride in the acquisition of successful linguistic skill.  The department strives to develop each individual to his/her maximum potential in the use and understanding of foreign languages and to promote the diversity of culture in the modern world.  The department fully supports the “languages for all” culture within the school, recognising that learning foreign languages challenges all students, stretching them intellectually, widening their horizons and opening up new areas of knowledge and experience.

We aim to develop global citizens equipped with the skills to succeed in today’s modern and fast-changing world. The study of languages enables students to cope with unpredictability, develops communication skills and contributes to confident and independent learners.

The department aims to offer at least one foreign trip per year in order to enable students to experience the culture and use their foreign language knowledge at first hand. Previous trips include Normandy, Rhine Valley, Frankfurt, Costa Brava and Christmas markets in Belgium and France.
